Brisbane Water Police are reminding all commercial and recreational vessel operators that being under the influence of alcohol and drugs significantly increases the risk of marine incidents and places them, passengers and crew at serious risk of harm.
A recent joint enforcement operation on the Brisbane River, conducted by Brisbane Water Police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, focused on ensuring compliance of passenger charter vessels within the commercial maritime industry.
As part of the operation, officers intercepted a passenger charter vessel near the New Farm ferry terminal on 19 June.
It will be alleged that the master, a 57-year-old Fortitude Valley man, returned a positive drug test while operating the commercial vessel and was subsequently issued with a Notice to Appear for the offence.
He is due to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 10 August.
With increased vessel traffic expected across south-east Queensland waterways during the June-July school holiday period, water police are encouraging vessel operators to ensure they are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, that vessels are properly equipped with safety gear, seaworthy, and operated safely.
