Mark pet rego date in your calendar

Darwin City Council

All Darwin dog and cat owners are encouraged to mark their calendars for 1 September – the date pets must be registered each year.

Registration applies to all Darwin dogs and cats older than three months.

General Manager Community and Regulatory Services, Matt Grassmayr, said animal registration and microchipping was a key part of responsible pet ownership.

“Registration and microchipping ensures we can reunite missing animals with their owners as soon as possible,” Mr Grassmayr said.

“City of Darwin also offers discounted microchipping for registered animals through our City of Darwin pound facility.”

Mr Grassmayr said benefits for the owners of registered animals included:

  • Registered animals are released back to owners free the first time they are picked up by Council rangers
  • Registered owners have free access to home consultations with animal education officers, monthly animal workshops and dog walking groups.

“We offer incentives like these because we know the benefits of responsible ownership flow on not only to the animals themselves but the community as a whole,” Mr Grassmayr said.

“Pets make great companions and great pets start with great owners. So, do the right thing by your pets and get them registered.”
