Spring is truly a magnificent time of the year in our shire. Crops are looking fantastic, lambs are frolicking and there are spring blossoms everywhere. Spring also means Energy Breakthrough (EB) is just around the corner.

Last year saw a much-welcomed return to this event after that 2-year Covid hiatus, and 2023 is ramping up to be even better, with more new events such as the robotics category.

Again, the call is out for helpers to sign up – and it’s not too late! This event could simply not run without hard working, dedicated and enthusiastic individuals like you. EB requires approximately 1000 volunteers, of all ages and abilities, and last year two of my fellow councillors and I signed up alongside many others. It was hands down, one of the highlights of the year for me.

There are so many ways you can help: communications, social media, judges for display & presentations, design & construction and track marshals.

Some people think they need to be available for the whole event? All day long? But this is simply not true! You can choose to help for a couple of hours, a full day, or the whole event. With a range of days and times available, EB provides flexibility to work for you.

If you are unsure of what role to put your name down for, EB needs to fill positions for judging on both Wednesday and Friday. But whatever you sign up for, you will be provided with full training, an EB branded shirt, lanyard & cap as well as all the food and drink you need.

“So what’s in it for me?” You may ask. Well, I personally get far more out of helping EB than what I put in. Some of the opportunities that will help you are:

  1. Learn new skills and gain experience
  2. Give back to, and be part of our community
  3. Make new friends and forge long lasting social connections
  4. Promote your own personal growth and self esteem
  5. Gain professional experience
  6. Feel a sense of belonging and being a part of a unique and big event

So if you are a returning volunteer, we thank you with much gratitude and if you are thinking about signing up for the first time, go for it! There’s still time.
