The McGowan Government will provide up to $400,000 over two years towards Aboriginal enterprise and tourism development programs that maximise local employment opportunities on the Dampier Peninsula.
The sealed Broome-Cape Leveque Road, jointly funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments, was officially opened yesterday (November 26).
The sealed road will bring new business and growth opportunities for the local community on the Dampier Peninsula.
Kimberley-based not-for-profit Morrgul has been awarded a $300,000 contract to help unlock economic opportunities through business skills and capacity building initiatives, ranging from tailored start-up support to helping established businesses implement growth strategies.
Around 2,000 people reside in the region in four major Aboriginal communities, comprising Beagle Bay, Ardyaloon (One Arm Point), Djarindjin, and Lombadina, together with people living on out-stations across the northern half of the peninsula.
A $100,000 tender for specialist market readiness support for mature tourism businesses on the Dampier Peninsula will soon be awarded.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“It is critical that Aboriginal people and businesses reap the benefits from increased accessibility and visitation on the Cape Leveque Road.
“This program will improve existing businesses, open up opportunities for new enterprises and support jobs growth in the region.
“This business incubation support will work with local tourism, aquaculture and horticulture, including bush foods, businesses to ensure local people can take full advantage of the opportunities that come with sealing the road.
“By supporting Aboriginal businesses and leadership, our Government is helping to build the long-term prosperity and diversity of the Kimberley community.”
