The McGowan Government is undertaking a range of upgrades to some of the city’s busiest roads in order to reduce congestion, and improve traffic flow and safety.
The notorious Wanneroo Road, Green Street and Walcott Street intersection has been allocated $2.5 million for upgrades through the Road Trauma Trust Account.
Early works, including service relocations, are currently underway with roadworks expected to commence in the second half of this year.
The upgrade to the congestion hotspot will create new safety features, with the removal of the right-turn filter movements for vehicles turning right from Charles Street into Walcott Street and Green Street. A dedicated green arrow will also be affixed as part of the road upgrades.
A traffic signal mast-arm will be installed at Wiluna Street to improve visibility of the signals and mitigate certain types of crashes.
Meanwhile, early planning is underway to design improvements to the intersection of Morley Drive and Wanneroo Road. Potential improvements include a shared bus queue jump to the left lanes on Morley Drive east and west approaches and departures along with additional through lanes on Wanneroo Road north and south approaches and departures.
The McGowan Government has allocated $3.2 billion towards WA road infrastructure to reduce congestion, improve safety and create thousands of Western Australian jobs.

“As a regular road user myself, often travelling close to a hundred kilometres a day, I know the real difference improved roads can make on the daily commute.
“I’m pleased my Government is investing significantly into job-creating road projects that improve our road networks across the State – reducing congestion woes and making it safer for Western Australians.”
As noted by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“The community would be aware of this Government’s work to fix the freeways and build METRONET, but we are also identifying and improving problem intersections such as these across the local road network.
“These upgrades are relatively low cost but can make a big difference to congestion and road safety.”

“Reducing congestion helps reduce rat runs and will free up our local roads, meaning motorists won’t need to seek alternative routes through our local neighbourhoods.
