Melton City Council makes $20,000 bushfire donation

Melton City Council will donate $20,000 to aid bushfire recovery efforts in Victoria, following a decision at its meeting last week.

The funds will go to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal to help address some of the most critical needs in the state’s fire ravaged areas.

City of Melton Mayor Cr Lara Carli said Council was committed to helping those impacted by the bushfires.

“It has been shocking and absolutely heartbreaking to see the destruction and devastation caused by the bushfires and I hope our donation can go some way to helping the affected communities recover,” Cr Carli said.

“Our thoughts are with the many people who have lost so much and we are committed to helping in any way we can.

“I’m proud of the support our residents have shown for this cause and proud that Council can add to their fundraising efforts.”

Council also agreed to host a special reception to celebrate the contribution that City of Melton firefighters and emergency workers have made in responding to the recent bushfire tragedies in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

“The staff and volunteers who have worked to fight these fires and help these communities recover have displayed admirable courage and dedication and this is our way of saying thank you,” Cr Carli said.

The special event and donation are just part of Council’s support, with skilled emergency management staff sent to assist in emergency relief efforts in East Gippsland and in Melbourne. Council has also collaborated with other councils on emergency management and with the Municipal Association of Victoria to provide a coordinated response to the recovery efforts.
