A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a seven-month-old girl from metropolitan Adelaide. She has been admitted to hospital and is in a critical condition.
The strain has been identified as serotype W.
Multiple people who had close contact with the patient have been identified, and seven people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.
Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.
There have been 11 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year, compared to five cases recorded at the same time last year. Of the 11 cases reported this year, six were serogroup W and five were serogroup B.
A total of five cases were reported in 2020. Of the five cases, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
