Meningococcal case 20 December 2021

A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 20-year-old male from regional South Australia, who sadly passed away in hospital.

The strain has been identified as serotype B.

SA Health has identified multiple people who had contact with the patient, of whom 11 people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information has been distributed to contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: National Guidelines for Public Health Units.

There have been 12 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year, compared to five cases recorded at the same time last year, and 27 cases at the same time in 2019.

Of the 12 cases this year, six are serogroup B and six are serogroup W.

A total of five cases were reported in 2020, while 27 cases were reported in 2019. Of the five cases in 2020, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
