Six young Sunraysia people have been selected to represent our region at the highest levels of State Government as part of the 2020 YMCA Youth Parliament program.

Brady Glen, Chloe Horne, Chloe Hosking, Ella Beard, Jordan Currie and Jemima Lotika make up the 2020 Mildura Rural City Council YMCA Youth Parliament team, following in the footsteps of a string of successful Youth Parliament teams from Mildura.

Each team must decide on an issue they believe needs to be addressed or is important to young Victorians, which will be the subject of a Bill they research and develop.

Teams will then debate their Bills in the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne over three days in July this year with teams from across Victoria.

The Mildura team’s Bill will be announced in coming weeks.

As part of the program, teams will receive training in public speaking and leadership at several residential camps, which will also be used to further research their Bills.

In addition to the residential camps, team members will spend at least five hours a week working on their Bill and associated speech-writing.

Councillor for Community Wellbeing and Services Gavin Sedgmen said the rewarding program had once again drawn out a group of inspiring young people from our region.

“The Youth Parliament program is a fantastic initiative that allows us to showcase the dedicated, visionary and passionate young people in our region to the rest of the State,” Cr Sedgmen said.

“More importantly, it’s a great way for young people to develop leadership, teamwork and networking skills in a setting that could potentially help or impact thousands of young people across Victoria.”

This year’s team represents a diverse range of backgrounds, including secondary school and university students, community workers, emergency services volunteers, as well as young people already involved in both Local Government and State Government.
