Ipswich could soon have a national-standard sport and recreation precinct, with the Miles Government committing $10 million to the proposed redevelopment of sporting facilities at North Ipswich.
A proposal to redevelop North Ipswich Reserve includes plans to build a 12,000 capacity mid-size fit-for-purpose rectangular stadium with upgraded facilities for high performance sports and more inclusive facilities for both community and elite sport.
As a key economic and lifestyle asset for Queensland’s fastest growing city, the upgraded North Ipswich Sport and Entertainment Precinct would also increase Ipswich’s ability to attract and host major sporting and cultural events.
The Miles Labor Government’s $10 million investment is in addition to the promised $20 million in Federal Government funding.
It’s understood the Ipswich Council will also contribute $10 million towards the project.
The State would seek to deliver the project in partnership with all three levels of government.
Following an agreement on funding and the development of a business case, steering and advisory groups would be established to confirm delivery costings, timeframes and construction requirements.
The North Ipswich Reserve currently has two rectangular training fields, a 6,000 capacity stadium, function centre, gymnasium and change rooms and is home to the Ipswich Jets Rugby League Football Club and Ipswich Jets Netball Club.
