Millions on offer to fund medical research in WA

  • Two funding programs announced to support health and medical research in WA
  • The WA Child Research Fund will support advances in child and adolescent health
  • The Research Institute Support program promotes excellence in WA medical research institutes

Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson is encouraging the State’s leading researchers and eligible medical research institutes to apply to one of two funding schemes to advance health and medical research and ultimately improve the quality of health care in the Western Australian community.

The WA Child Research Fund is co-funded by the State Government and Channel 7 Telethon Trust to support research of significance into child and adolescent health in WA.

This year, each successful applicant will be awarded up to $600,000 in funding (allocated over three years). Funded activities can include basic, clinical, health service, or population health research.

To date, Telethon and the State Government have contributed a total of $38 million to fund ten annual rounds of the program.

Previously funded projects have had success in gaining significant national and international funding, improving health policy and practice, developing new treatments and therapies, and increasing research capacity within the sector.

The Research Institute Support program provides indirect research cost funding to eligible medical research institutes in WA.

This year the program will be offering $6.5 million for the 2023 calendar year to support indirect costs of research.

Indirect costs of research refer to resources essential for supporting high-quality research that isn’t directly funded by research grants.

Funding for this program is provided by the Department of Health.

As stated by Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson:

“This contribution from the McGowan Government is supporting Telethon’s work to improve the health and wellbeing of our young people.

“Our State’s child health researchers are doing incredible work to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases and chronic conditions affecting WA kids.

“The McGowan Government is committed to further developing and enriching WA’s health and medical research ecosystem and ensuring research findings can be translated into tangible benefits for all Western Australians.

“I look forward to seeing the child health research that will be supported through the WA Child Research Fund, and the continued success of WA’s outstanding medical research institutes, supported by the Research Institute Support program.”
