Minderoo research lab completes Exmouth’s Ningaloo Centre

  • World-class oceans research laboratory opens at the State-funded Exmouth Ningaloo Centre
  • Successful State partnerships resolve legacy issues at Ningaloo Centre
  • Laboratory helping to attract highly skilled workforce to the Gascoyne
  • The Minderoo Exmouth Research Laboratory has been officially opened today, putting the Gascoyne at the cutting-edge of global oceans research and completing the State-funded Exmouth Ningaloo Centre.

The State Government invested $22 million to develop the Exmouth Ningaloo Centre, and since 2017 the McGowan Government has worked closely with the Shire of Exmouth and Minderoo Foundation to ensure the centre met its full potential.

Most recently, the McGowan Government provided $320,000 to support installation of a solar energy system at the Ningaloo Centre, which will account for more than 60 per cent of the centre and laboratory’s energy needs.

The Minderoo Exmouth Research Laboratory will play a key role in driving the local economy, attracting highly skilled researchers and operational staff to the Gascoyne region.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“With support from the McGowan Government, it’s great to finally see the Ningaloo Centre completed with the opening of the Exmouth Minderoo Research Lab.

“This lab is an important asset in Exmouth’s emerging ‘blue economy’ and plays a critical role in supporting economic diversification in the community.

“Minderoo Foundation’s commitment to marine conservation represents an extraordinary philanthropic and scientific contribution to the planet’s health.

“We commend the Shire of Exmouth and Minderoo Foundation for their hard work and collaboration in bringing the lab to life and putting the Gascoyne front-and-centre in global marine conservation research.”
