Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today confirmed approval of a structure plan for a section of Lot 3082 Cable Beach Road East in Broome that will allow for a variety of commercial and retail developments.
Earlier this year, the Minister called-in the application for her determination due to the representations made by the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and the wide variety of views held on the project by the community and stakeholders and the economic and regional significance of the proposal.
The structure plan area applies to about 5.4 hectares of land adjoining the Broome International Airport and is zoned ‘Development’ in the shire’s Local Planning Scheme.
The land is owned by local Broome Aboriginal corporation Nyamba Buru Yawuru and is one of the sites granted to traditional owners, the Yawuru people, through an Indigenous Land Use Agreement.
Structure planning is a preliminary stage in the planning process and the proponent must undertake further detailed planning at each subsequent stage of the process.
In making her decision, the Minister considered submissions from Nyamba Buru Yawuru, the Western Australian Planning Commission, the Shire of Broome and the public. Copies of those submissions and the decision are available at https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/broome-call-in

“I have considered this application on its merits, taking into account its strategic significance, relevant planning frameworks and the range of views presented.
“This proposal has the potential to create significant, ongoing economic benefits for the Broome community, the Yawuru community and the broader West Kimberley region through local employment opportunities during planning and construction, and in the longer term.
“As Western Australia continues to feel the economic aftershocks from COVID-19, this Government remains committed to fostering economic stimulus in the regions.”
