Murray River Council can confirm a fire incident occurred at the Moama Recreation Reserve Complex during the Murray Football League Grand Final on Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 3.30pm, smoke was detected in the male toilets and cleaners’ cupboard, with smoke subsequently entering the building’s ceiling space. Emergency services were immediately contacted, and the building and grandstand were evacuated as a precaution while Fire and Rescue NSW, the RFS and NSW Police attended and managed the incident.
Importantly, no injuries have been reported.
Murray River Council CEO, Stacy Williams said the quick response from everyone on site helped ensure the safety of patrons, players, staff and volunteers.
“We are very grateful for the quick action and cooperation of the Deniliquin Rams Football Netball Club, who were operating the canteen, as well as the Moama Football Netball Club and Murray Football Netball League,” Ms Williams said.
“Their immediate response, along with the professional work of Fire and Rescue NSW, the RFS and NSW Police, ensured the incident was safely contained and the building was evacuated without injury.”
“Emergency services remained on site until approximately 7.15pm to ensure the fire and smoke risks had been fully addressed, with Council staff also working alongside emergency services to assist with the building’s handover.”
“While it was an unfortunate disruption to what should have been a great day of football and netball , the safety of everyone attending was the priority, and we are thankful to all involved for their calm and prompt response.”
Council will undertake further assessment of the building and any required remediation works.
The facility will remain closed to the public until further notice.
