Monash University welcomed two global rankings released today, underlining Monash’s credentials as a modern, world-leading university.
Monash ranked second in Australia in the Academic Ranking of World Universities’ (ARWU) ShanghaiRanking’s 2019 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), with the No.1 national spot in nine subjects.
And in the Times Higher Education Golden Age Rankings, Monash was named sixth in the world. Golden Age universities are defined as institutions founded in what can be seen as the ‘Golden Age’ of higher education, from 1945 to 1966.
Monash was among the nation’s top-performing institutions in the ARWU rankings, with three entries in the global top 10, and 17 subjects ranked internationally in the top 50.
Monash Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was No.1 nationally and the University’s highest globally ranked subject at No.7 in the world.
Other Monash subjects ranked No.1 in Australia include:

- Education
- Business Administration
- Energy Science and Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Chemistry
Monash showed major improvement in a number of areas, including Physics, which jumped 80 places in this year’s rankings. Public Administration, Political Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Ecology also improved significantly.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AO said the results reflected the University’s continuous endeavour to deliver world class excellence in research, education and international collaboration.
“In fewer than 60 years since its foundation, Monash University has transformed at a pace and scale that places it among the best universities in the world. Only a handful of universities worldwide can match that success and the trajectory we have set for ourselves,” Professor Gardner said.
“Through our culture of innovation and remarkable record for collaboration Monash is now recognised worldwide for translating expertise into genuine impact. This reputation and success attracts individuals and organisations all over the world to work with us.”
Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Marc Parlange said these rankings were further recognition of the positive impact the University is making in research and innovation worldwide.
“These results are testament to Monash University’s commitment to excellence, from recruiting and developing international talent and investing in world-class research infrastructure, to our deep and sustained engagement with institutions, industries and governments worldwide.”
Since 2017, the ShanghaiRankings GRAS ranking has produced a comprehensive set of academic subjects. There are now 52 subjects ranked across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. More than 4000 universities are ranked each year.
