Monash University has achieved pleasing results in two university subject rankings, with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2024 and the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023 (GRAS) released late last week.
Monash has set excellence for Australia by taking first place across several subjects and is within the top 50 globally in the latest round of subject rankings, which delve deeper into specific disciplines.
Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Elliott AM said the University’s unwavering dedication to academic excellence, teaching and research has again garnered recognition from esteemed international rankings.

ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2023
The ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) ranks 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. More than 1900 universities across 104 countries and regions are listed in the rankings.
Monash has performed strongly across the world and within Australia. Thirteen of the University’s subjects placed in the top 50 and overall 34 subjects are in the top 100 globally.
Globally, Mining and Mineral Engineering ranked 5th (1st in Australia), Business Administration ranked 7th (1st in Australia), and Nursing ranked 3rd in the world (equal second in Australia).
Monash ranked 1st in Australia in Biomedical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, and Finance while Statistics, Law, Chemical Engineering and Sociology were ranked equal first.
Other subjects that performed well nationally were Remote Sensing (equal 2nd) and Management (2nd), Transportation Science and Technology (3rd), Biotechnology (equal 3rd), Biological Sciences (equal 3rd), Human Biological Sciences (equal 3rd), Public Health (3rd), Medical Technology (equal 3rd), Clinical Medicine (4th) and Public Administration (equal 5th).
The subjects that improved the most compared to the previous year were Computer Science and Engineering, soaring up 28 places and Finance up 19 places.
Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2024
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject ranks 11 subjects across Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Clinical and Health, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Psychology, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.
Monash achieved standout results across all 11 subjects globally, placing 1st in Australia for Computer Science for the first time and Engineering in consecutive years, with the remaining nine subjects in the top six nationally.
On the world stage, the best-ranked subjects globally were Education (16th), Clinical and Health (29th), Business and Economics (46th), Psychology (50th), Arts and Humanities (52nd), Computer Science (52nd) and Engineering (54th).
These results follow Monash’s exceptional achievement in the QS World University Rankings 2024 in which we placed 42nd in the world and rank in the top 50 across a broad range of subjects.
