Monash University has placed firmly among the world’s elite research institutions in the global rankings of the influential Nature Index, which measures contributions to high-quality scientific research papers.
The University ranked in the top 20% at 98 globally and second in Australia ahead almost 200 other Australian institutions, according to the index published today by the Nature Publishing Group.
The Nature Index is based on an institution’s contributions to 82 top-tier journals, taking in about 60,000 high-quality papers each year in the areas of life science, physical sciences, earth and environmental sciences and chemistry.
It counts both the number of articles (AC) by universities and research institutions, and a weighted contribution of the authors using the fractional counting system (FC).
The Index shows Monash researchers authoring 439 publications in 2018. The University’s highest output by field was Life Sciences ranking 89 globally, followed by Chemistry, Physical Sciences, and Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Provost and Senior Vice-President, Professor Marc Parlange, said the University’s impressive Nature Index ranking highlighted the impact Monash academics are making on global scientific research.
“These results reflect the high-quality of science research being produced by our talented and engaged academic staff,” Professor Parlange said.
“This is underscored by the University’s commitment to leverage our research strengths, develop and attract research talent of the highest international standard and foster a truly multidisciplinary research environment.”
According to the results, Australia ranked 10 globally for its contribution to scientific research papers of the 50 countries tabled.
