More Affordable Housing for More Territorians

NT Government

All Territorians deserve access to quality and affordable accommodation. That’s why the Territory Labor Government is building more affordable housing right across the Territory.

A tender for almost $12 million has been awarded to Territory company NTEX Civil Construction and Demolition, to demolish and remediate the public housing complex on Shiers Street.

During the demolition phase, 45 jobs have been created, supporting a strong pipeline of work for our construction industry.

Circular economy processes have been employed by NTEX to recycle and reuse building materials, soil and remediate trees on site.

Furthermore, the Northern Territory Government is now seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) to develop new housing on Shiers Street.

This project will represent the first significant redevelopment opportunity for the affordable housing sector in the Northern Territory.

The EOI is seeking proponents interested in a Build-to-Rent model which will deliver a high-quality residential precinct, with the successful proponent set to take on long-term asset and tenancy management at the site.

Expressions of interest close Friday 10 November and represent the first stage in a 2-stage process to identify an experienced provider capable of leading the project.

Quote attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“Everybody deserves a safe, fit-for purpose home and we are working hard to deliver more homes for more Territorians.

“It’s exciting to see the next stage for the Shiers Street public housing complex, which was built in the 1970s and its buildings are now considered ‘end of life’.

“NTEX is a quality Territory company that will undertake the demolition and site remediation stages of this project. Where possible they will implement processes to recycle materials.”

Quote attributable to Local Member for Fong Lim, Mark Monaghan:

“Our government knows the high demand for housing and housing services across the Northern Territory and that is why we are investing in a range of strategies and projects that will give more Territorians access to safe, secure and affordable housing.

“This is a great project for the community of Fong Lim, with the Sheirs Street public housing long overdue to be demolished and new development to arise.

“Due to its location and size, the Shiers Street site is ideal for redevelopment to increase dwelling yield and provide new, fit for purpose affordable housing.”
