Most schools that were in the path of Cyclone Seroja have now been cleared to open for the start of Term 2.
Thirty-eight schools have been cleared to open by the Department of Finance and the Department of Education. Three schools have been cleared of cyclone damage but remain without power. The Department of Education is working hard to find temporary solutions where it is possible.
As road closures ease and the clean-up continues across the Mid-West, an assessment of the five remaining schools will be made on when it is possible to open them.
This information is being regularly updated and members of the community are encouraged to visit the education.wa.edu.au website for the latest information on which schools have been cleared to reopen.
A Parent Helpline (1800 882 345 from 8am to 8pm) has also been set up for parents of affected schools that require advice or support relating to their child’s education.
The Department of Education is continuing to provide support to staff and families who have been affected by Cyclone Seroja. A team of school psychologists, chaplains and experienced collegiate principals is also arriving in the Mid-West to provide hands-on support for the schools and communities affected.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“As devastating as Cyclone Seroja has been, it is reassuring to see that so many schools are ready to open their doors for the start of Term 2.
“Forty-six public schools were in the path of Cyclone Seroja, and 38 schools have already been given the all clear to welcome back students next week.
“I am always impressed by the incredible dedication shown by members of our school communities, particularly during times such as these. They continue to step up and work tirelessly behind the scenes to support students’ learning.
“The Department of Education is continuing to provide support to staff and families who have been affected by Cyclone Seroja, and parents with any questions about their child’s school are encouraged to call 1800 882 345. Principals will also be communicating with parents and carers.”
