More Support for New Educators

NT Government

1 June 2022

The Territory Labor Government is investing in additional support for early career teachers across the NT.

Close to 200 new teachers commenced in Northern Territory Government schools this year.

To continue to maintain a strong teaching workforce, the Territory Government is investing $160,000 in grant funding through the NT Early Career Teacher Program.

Grants are being used to support early career teachers to have relevant support, with a focus on mentoring, coaching and professional development.

2022 is a complex year to begin a teaching career due to the increased impacts of COVID-19 on our school operations. Early Career Teacher Support Grants have been provided in recognition that additional support at this time will help to improve student learning and retain these great educators in the Territory.

These grants are assisting early career teachers with the opportunity to connect with colleagues, hear shared learnings, receive experience advice on professional practice and identify additional support and learning opportunities in the future.

So far 189 early career teachers have taken part in this program.

Quotes from the Minister for Education Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government understands to have high quality schooling our teachers need to be supported – this provides for long-term retention and success.

“These grants demonstrate our focus on supporting all our teachers to grow and recognise the importance of tailoring supports to meet the needs of new educators.

“These grants are being welcomed by school principals, enabling them to provide more opportunities for early career teachers to receive feedback and coaching about their practice.”
