More support for Tasmania’s Legal Assistance Sector

Elise Archer,Attorney-General

Minister for Justice

As Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, I am pleased to announce the successful recipients of the additional Commonwealth legal assistance sector funding which will help more Tasmanians navigate the justice system, and ensure that Tasmanians who need extra help, particularly our most vulnerable, can access free or low-cost legal services.

The successful recipients are:

  • Hobart Community Legal Service to receive $520,000 over four years to support people with mental health conditions to access justice and for frontline support to address workplace sexual harassment;
  • Tasmanian Legal Aid to receive $1,411,000 over four years to support people with mental health conditions to access justice; and
  • Women’s Legal Service of Tasmania to receive $388,000 over four years for frontline support to address workplace sexual harassment.

This funding has been committed to Tasmania’s vital legal assistance sector in addition to funding already delivered by our Government and under the National Legal Assistance Partnership.

This is also in addition to the successful recipients of the additional State funding that I announced last week in Budget Estimates, which are:

  • Prisoners Legal Service Tasmania to receive $80,000 for a preventative lawyering initiative working with prison inmates to develop strategies to prevent conflict and resolve outstanding legal issues;
  • Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service to receive $77,000 for the Safe Haven Enterprise Visa Pathways Program; and
  • Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service to receive $202,750 for a Community Legal Education Program.

Later this year, I look forward to opening another round of State funding to seek innovative projects that will further assist Tasmanians to access the justice system.
