Motorists urged to delay travel to Tanami Desert region

Motorists are being urged to delay all travel on unsealed roads in the Central Australian area after a number of motorists becoming stranded due to localised flooding in the Tanami Desert region.

Two men who were stranded on the Tanami Road overnight, have made their way back to Alice Springs after flood waters receded earlier today.

A bus carrying 18 people, 16 adults and two children was located by a Mining organisation after it broke down on the Lajamanu Road. Localised flooding in the area meant the group was stranded there since 5:30pm yesterday. The group is being assisted with accommodation or returning to community by the Tanami Mining Camp.

Regional Manager for the Northern Territory Emergency Service, Nicholas Cowham urged all motorists to avoid travelling in the area and for community members to check road closures and conditions prior to travel.

“There has been heavy rainfall across the area and more is expected in the coming 24 hours, said Mr Cowham

“People travelling in these areas need to make sure they don’t put themselves or others at risks by driving through or entering flooded causeways or rivers, and to instead delay all travel, especially as flooding in the area is expected.”

“Road conditions and closures can be checked online at www.roadreport.nt.gov.au but it’s pretty simple – if it’s raining and it’s a dirt road, it’s likely you’ll get bogged.”
