The passion and commitment of Aboriginal Elders has been celebrated in a special NAIDOC art competition at the Boom Gate Gallery at Long Bay Correctional Complex.

The artworks paid tribute to Elders who are respected in their communities as storytellers, lore keepers, sources of culture and champions for change.

Among the winners was a female inmate’s piece called ‘Three Kangaroos’, which portrayed the silhouettes of three ‘roos against the red hue of a setting sun.

The winning artwork in the male category was aptly titled ‘NAIDOC Long Bay’, portraying two Aboriginal people sitting next to a fire as it conjures a whale in the smoke.
