NAIDOC Group Exhibition at burraja gallery

Burraja gallery presents ‘VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH.’ a group exhibition from local First Nations artists who have dissected and rebuilt the 2019 NAIDOC theme (of the same title: Voice. Treaty. Truth.) – opening Thursday, July 11.

This exhibition showcases contemporary reflections on colonisation, dispossession and how we got to where we stand – presented by 15 local First Nations artists through painting, drawing, ceramics, artefact-making, photomedia and film.

Burraja gallery Curator Bethany Thornber asked artists to creatively respond to historical stimulus.

“This year’s NAIDOC theme lends itself to an exhibition which features evocative and confronting artwork from local First Nations artists. Those involved did not shy away from pronouncing their thoughts on colonisation and the ongoing aftermath,” said Ms Thornber.

The theme ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth.’ chosen by the NAIDOC committee represents the “three key elements to the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. These reforms represent the unified position of First Nations Australians.”

Burraja gallery, alongside the NAIDOC committee believes that “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.”

VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. opens Thursday, July 11, from 5.30pm, at burraja gallery.

The exhibition runs until August 27.

WHERE: burraja gallery, 44-46 Lincoln Causeway, Gateway Village, Wodonga. CURATED by Bethany Thornber. COST: FREE.
