The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burns in the near Digman’s Creek and Wadbilliga National Park, 8 May, weather permitting.
NPWS area manager, Max Beukers, said the 2 burns at Digman’s Creek and the 4 in Wadbilliga will cover over 8500 hectares.
“The burns will help protect these areas and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties,” Mr Beukers said.
“The burns are due to begin at about noon and motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and observe and warning signs or directions from fire crews.
“There are no planned closures of public roads but some park management trails and all areas that are included in the hazard reduction burns will be closed.
“Smoke from the burns may be visible in Dignam’s Creek, Cobargo, Quaama, Upper Brogo, Wandella and Yowrie, as well as Bega Valley, Bermagui, Tilba and Kybeyan depending on wind directions.
Additional burns may be scheduled over the weekend in Biamanga National Park west and south of Bermagui over the weekend. These are subject to favourable weather conditions.
“We thank our neighbours for their understanding.
People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.”
These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across New South Wales each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over 6 years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
