Today, Queensland Police Service (QPS) joins police services and communities across Australia in recognising National Police Legacy Day, a day dedicated to honouring the families of police officers and recognising the enduring support provided through Police Legacy.
This year’s theme, ‘with you every day’, reflects the unwavering commitment Police Legacy organisations make to the loved ones of officers who have who have lost their lives or are suffering a terminal illness.
Police Legacy provides support not only in the immediate aftermath of loss, but throughout the months, years and generations that follow.
Founded in Queensland 55 years ago, Police Legacy has since grown into a nationwide movement, with the organisations supporting police families in every state and territory.
National Police Legacy Day is held annually on 17 June to mark the anniversary of that foundation and recognises the lasting impact of the organisation’s work.
In Queensland, Police Legacy is governed by 12 volunteer directors, all serving Queensland police officers, who work alongside dedicated support staff to provide practical assistance, financial support and meaningful connections for police families navigating grief and loss.
Queensland Police Legacy President and Detective Senior Sergeant, Kent Ellis said the organisation’s role extends far beyond moments of tragedy.
“National Police Legacy Day is an opportunity to recognise the families who stand behind the badge and the sacrifices they make in support of policing,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ellis said.
“Grief and loss are deeply personal experiences, and no two journeys are the same.
“What Queensland Police Legacy provides is a community of people who understand those experiences and can walk alongside one another through life’s challenges.
“This year’s theme reflects our commitment to supporting police families for the long term. Whether that support is practical, financial or simply providing connection, we want families to know they are never alone.”
Born in Queensland, Police Legacy has grown into a national movement of care, compassion and support.
Today, we honour not only those we have lost, but also the strength, resilience and ongoing contribution of the families they leave behind.
National Police Legacy Day also serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting the broader police family and ensuring those affected by loss remain connected to a community that understands their experiences.
