National Safe Boating Week 2020 Day 1 – Know it

Australian Maritime Safety Authority

National Safe Boating Week is an annual event coordinated by Australia and New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group (ANZSBEG) members.

The aim of the #safeboating week is to increase safe practices and promote responsible boat ownership. This #safeboating week, members will be highlighting a different safety theme each day. Today’s theme is:

Safe boating means knowing the limits of your vessel.

Make sure your boat is seaworthy and appropriate for your chosen activity.

Ask yourself some simple questions—is this the best vessel for the job? Are there more suitable vessels available?

There are many factors to consider when assessing the suitability of a vessel to undertake the tasks at hand safely, including, vessel design to undertake specified operations, basic flotation, rail heights, load carrying capacity, range capability to operate offshore, ability to handle foreseeable weather conditions and others.

Talk to an accredited marine surveyor about what you use your vessel for and have them assess it to figure out its suitability. Make sure you know your vessel’s limitations. Conduct a detailed risk assessment. If necessary, consider options for a more suitable vessel in your business planning.
