Batteries should not go in rubbish bins as they are hazardous to the environment and contain valuable metals which should be recovered instead of being lost to landfill.
To help residents dispose of batteries responsibly, Horsham Rural City Council has battery and e-waste recycling bins at the Civic Centre and the Horsham Library.
Mayor Robyn Gulline said recycling batteries was the best way to keep our community and environment safe.
“Batteries should never be disposed of in bins. The most common cause of fires in garbage trucks and at landfill sites is batteries that have been disposed of in kerbside bins,” Cr Gulline said.
“If your batteries end up in landfill, they can potentially harm wildlife and affect surrounding soil or waterways – another good reason to keep them out of your bins.”

You can now recycle the following types of household batteries for free at the Civic Centre and the Horsham Library:
- AA
- AAA
- C
- D
- 9 volt batteries
- Button cell batteries
Alternatively, Council’s waste facilities accept all of these batteries for recycling free of charge, as well as mobile phone, computer and laptop batteries, power tool batteries and car batteries.
“All of the batteries Council collects are recycled safely and importantly, kept out of landfill. Please don’t ever put batteries in any of your kerbside bins,” Cr Gulline said.
