New Ambulance Station and 15 additional ambos for Gold Coast region

Gold Coast residents needing emergency pre-hospital health care will be better serviced thanks to a new multi-million-dollar Ambulance Station and a staffing boost in the area.

Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services Steven Miles today committed to building a new state-of-the-art facility at Ormeau.

“We know Ormeau and surrounding suburbs are rapidly expanding and this announcement today shows this Government is committed to delivering the best care when people find themselves in need of an ambulance,” Mr Miles said.

“A population growth of around 124 per cent is expected in this region between 2016 and 2036, using medium series estimations, and we want to ensure the community’s expectations are being met during a medical emergency.”

The future station will be located at 115 Peachey Road, Ormeau and has good access to the Pacific Motorway and the industrial/residential areas of Ormeau and allows for future expansion.

“Officers at the existing stations at Beenleigh, Pimpama and Coomera do a fantastic job servicing the local community and that high standard of care will be reinforced when the new station becomes operational.”

Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the Gold Coast Local Ambulance Service Network (LASN) would also get an immediate boost with an additional 15 staff thanks to record funding of $885.7 million in the 2019/20 Budget.

“The Gold Coast is a growth corridor and we need to meet demand by bolstering emergency pre-hospital care,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Of the 15 additional staff, Coomera Station will be home to seven new paramedics which will go a long way to help meet increased demand.

“The other eight positions will be Patient Transport Officers who will be vital in keeping the load of non-emergency cases off acute crews.

“This forms part of our commitment to keep Queenslanders healthy by enhancing the number of ambulance officers around the state.”

QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles the additional staff were a welcome boost to the Gold Coast LASN.

“We’re seeing an increased demand for our services and having 15 new operational staff on the road helping the Gold Coast community goes a long way towards improving our response capability,” Mr Bowles said.

“The new Ormeau Station will also contribute to improving response times across the region and we’re planning for it to be a 24 hour station.”

“It will be designed and built using the latest techniques and staff operating out of it will have access to state-of-the-art facilities including rest-study areas, patient care and equipment storage, amenities and a break out space. Importantly it will also allow for future expansion.
