New apprentices join Parks and Gardens team

Horsham Rural City Council continues to see younger people’s careers thrive through apprenticeships.

“Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills, whilst offering a potential pathway into their dream field,” said Team Leader of Streetscapes and Botanics, Ryan Johnstone.

Council has recently appointed Millie and Lauren, two new apprentices within the Parks and Gardens Unit.

One position is replacing a successfully completed apprenticeship, whilst the other is through the Victorian Apprenticeship Recovery Package, funded by the State Government.

They will begin working within the Streetscapes and Botanics teams over the coming weeks, and eventually work with all of the Parks and Gardens teams.

“It’s going to gain them a broad range of horticultural skills over the next three years, including plant and garden bed maintenance, tree works, environmental management and turf and grounds maintenance,” said Mr Johnstone.

Two of the Council’s recent graduating apprentices, Ty and Corey, have also been appointed to full time positions within the Parks and Gardens Unit.

“This has been the case for a number of apprentices within the Council over the years. It’s a true testimony to the training that the apprentices receive throughout their time at trade school and in the workplace,” he said.

“It’s great to see the results of these apprenticeships as the graduates move into the workforce in full time positions, whether it be with the Horsham Rural City Council or an alternate employment.”
