New Bill means greater access to justice for Tasmanians

Guy Barnett, Attorney General

The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to improve and streamline the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) with the tabling of a new Bill in Parliament this week.

The Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2023 will transfer the jurisdiction of the Property Agents Tribunal to TASCAT meaning conduct complaints against property agents – and appeals against its decisions – will now be dealt with by TASCAT.

This latest change is part of a process in which the operations of several boards and tribunals have been amalgamated into TASCAT to provide a faster, cheaper and less formal forum for Tasmanians to interact with these forums.

“This Bill is the latest in a series of reforms flowing from the establishment of TASCAT in 2021, which was a landmark law reform delivered by the Tasmanian Liberal Government,” said Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett.

“Having a one-stop tribunal in this State is a great achievement for Tasmania and means greater consistency in decision-making across a range of civil and administrative matters and improved access to justice for all Tasmanians.

The new Bill will also amend several Acts leading to improvements in TASCAT’S procedures.

“TASCAT staff have worked tirelessly to merge separate Tribunal’s with various functions over the past two years, so I want to recognise their work to assist Tasmanians to have the access to justice they need and deserve” he said.
