New CEO to lead Australian fisheries into future

  • Mr Norris has qualifications in natural resource management and over 20 years’ experience in fisheries management, regulation and development

Mr Wez Norris has today been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA).

Minster for Agriculture David Littleproud and Assistant Minister for Agriculture Senator Richard Colbeck welcomed Mr Norris to the role, recognising his experience in all aspects of fisheries management, regulation and development.

“Mr Norris brings unique expertise to the role, with strong understanding of Australia’s fisheries and the Australian fishing industry,” Minister Littleproud said.

“He has significant experience in fisheries management having held executive positions in the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, AFMA and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

“I am confident Mr Norris will provide the leadership needed to ensure the ongoing good management and sustainable use of Commonwealth fish resources, a strong compliance culture to deter illegal fishing in the Australian Fishing Zone and prioritising research funding towards activities that directly benefit the Australian fishery industry.

“I thank the outgoing CEO Dr James Findlay and Ms Anna Willock who has been acting in the role for their valuable contributions to AFMA.”

Assistant Minister Colbeck said the appointment would support AFMA’s ongoing work to ensure Australia continues to be a global leader in fisheries management.

“As a former AFMA employee Mr Norris has a working knowledge of the organisation and the critical role it plays in helping Australian fisheries improve profitability and returns,” Senator Colbeck said.

“I am pleased to welcome Mr Norris as the new AFMA CEO to continue the vital work they undertake, including leading our world-class fisheries management policy.”

Fast Facts:

  • Mr Norris was identified as the best candidate following a merit-based selection process.
  • The former CEO, Dr James Findlay, resigned on 23 November 2018 to take-up the position of Director of National Parks.
  • Ms Anna Willock has been acting in the role since 24 November 2018.​
