The Victorian Government has announced Victoria Elliott as the new Commissioner for the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).
Ms Elliott brings a wealth of expertise to the role as an integrity specialist and lawyer with more than 25 years’ experience in the management of legal investigations, compliance and integrity frameworks.
She is currently serving her third term as a Deputy Public Interest Monitor (PIM), having first been appointed to the role in 2016.
During her time at the PIM, Ms Elliott implemented its Witness Protection and Police Detention monitoring role in collaboration with Victoria Police.
Prior to this, Ms Elliott worked as a managing lawyer at IBAC from 2013 to 2016 where she helped establish the legal team and served as counsel assisting, conducting and managing litigation and prosecutions, including in the High Court and Court of Appeal, and provided critical advice to the Commissioner on complex issues.
From 2005 to 2013, Ms Elliott worked at the Office of Police Integrity where she went on to become managing lawyer, pioneering the agency’s first public hearings on police misconduct.
She was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor at the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia in 2005.
Ms Elliott holds a Master of Criminology and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University.
Ms Elliott’s appointment follows a thorough recruitment process, including consideration by Parliament’s Integrity and Oversight Committee. She will start a five-year term as IBAC Commissioner on 16 December 2023.
