New designs for more local shop upgrades

The ACT Government is delivering its biggest ever suburban infrastructure upgrade program with new designs for improvements at local shops in Calwell, Evatt and Lanyon Valley.

“We are investing in more local shop upgrades by making sure shopping precincts are vibrant places for businesses and residents,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

“Increasingly we are hearing from Canberrans about their desire to support local shopping centres and see businesses thrive. However, many of our older shopping centres are ageing, so we’re continuing our largest ever investment in suburban infrastructure upgrades to enhance these vital community hubs.

“Following the completion of major works at the local shops in Campbell and Duffy, we are now releasing preliminary designs to the community and asking for feedback on upgrades to the public spaces at the Evatt local shops, Calwell Group Centre and Lanyon Marketplace.

“We want to hear from the community about what improvement they would like to see in public spaces around their shops, responding to the concept designs that have been released.

“Some of the upgrades proposed include accessibility improvement including footpaths, car parking and safe crossings. Other upgrades focus on improving spaces for gathering and enjoying public spaces around shopping centres whether it be with new seating and landscaping, murals, play elements or lighting.

“Feedback will be used to inform the final designs which we expect to be complete around the end of the year ahead of construction.”

The ACT Government has also released preliminary designs for minor improvements at the local shops in Macquarie, Monash and Narrabundah. A design and construct tender will shortly be released for these works with construction expected to commence later this year.

“The second half of this year will see exciting improvements to suburban infrastructure across the city, with construction also expected to commence on upgrades to Brierly Street in Weston next to Cooleman Court, the Charnwood Group Centre and Hardwick Crescent at the Kippax Group Centre,” said Minister Steel.
