The Finocchiaro CLP Government is backing new aviation links that open the Territory up to the region, with Aero Dili launching its first-ever direct service to Australia – touching down in Darwin this Sunday.

The new twice-weekly Darwin-Dili service will strengthen trade, investment, tourism and cultural ties between the Northern Territory and one of our closest neighbours.

President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, His Excellency Dr José Ramos-Horta, and Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill OAM, will travel on the inaugural flight into Darwin International Airport.

Aero Dili’s inaugural direct flight from Dili will touch down in Darwin this Sunday, 21 June – the airline’s first-ever service to Australia and a significant milestone for its growing international network.

The decision to choose Darwin reinforces the city’s role as a gateway between Australia and the region and is a strong vote of confidence in the Territory.

Timor-Leste is not only geographically close – we share deep historical ties through people-to-people connections, health partnerships, regional trade, and growing education and workforce links. As one of Asia’s youngest nations and ASEAN’s newest member, Timor-Leste is building the international connectivity it needs to support its economic future, and the Territory is proud to be part of that story.

“We congratulate Aero Dili on adding Darwin as its first Australian destination – a commendable milestone for the airline’s growing international network,” Minister Cahill said.

“As one of our closest neighbours, Timor-Leste is an increasingly important trade, investment and strategic partner. This new service will strengthen business links, support tourism and workforce mobility, and give Territorians more choice to travel, trade and invest with our neighbours.”

“The first Aero Dili route from Dili to Darwin is more than a flight route. It is a bridge of friendship, commerce, education and people-to-people connection across the Timor Sea,” President Ramos-Horta said.

Mr Lourenco De Oliveira, Aero Dili President and Chief Executive Officer, said “This inaugural flight represents a proud and historic milestone for Aero Dili as we expand our international network and connect Timor-Leste directly with Australia for the first time.”

“Darwin is a natural partner for Timor-Leste. The close geographic proximity, strong people-to-people connections and growing economic relationship make this an important route for both countries.”

“We are excited to provide new travel opportunities for passengers, support tourism and business growth, and further strengthen the friendship between Timor-Leste and Australia.”

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is committed to sustainably growing the Territory’s aviation sector and will continue backing new air links that connect the Territory with the region and keep the economy moving forward.

The estimated cost for the Minister is $2,200, with final costs to be reported after the trip in line with standard reporting processes.
