Supreme Court Justice Martin Hinton will commence work as South Australia’s new Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday 18 November.
Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman wished Justice Hinton well in the new role, saying he was an eminently qualified legal practitioner.
“To have someone of Justice Hinton’s calibre and extensive legal experience bodes well for the office and the prosecution of serious criminal offences in South Australia,” Ms Chapman said.
“Justice Hinton has been a highly respected member of the judiciary and his experience in criminal law and in the justice system will provide him unique insights into how the office should best operate to maximise successes and efficiencies.”
Justice Hinton was appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia in April 2016, having held the role of Solicitor-General for nearly eight years.
During his time as Solicitor-General, he routinely appeared in the High Court of Australia. Justice Hinton was a Senior Prosecutor within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions from 2000 to 2007 and was appointed the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions before being appointed Solicitor-General.
Justice Hinton’s resignation of his commission as a judge will take effect on Sunday 17 November.
