Artbank’s latest exhibition brings together a large body of visual and digital work by 12 Indigenous artists from the Nyapari community in South Australia.
After two years, the Tjungu Palyangku Tjukurpa titutjara kunpu ngaranytja-ku | As we come together we stand strong for our story exhibition is now open to the public. This community-led exhibition tells Tjukurpa (sacred stories) across different mediums including painting, ink drawing and performance video in a unique and innovative way.
Led by the Watarru Collaborative, the Kanmpi Collaborative and the Wati Collaborative, the artists illustrate the vibrancy and contemporary nature of their stories and way of life through inma (performing sacred ritual).
Some of the artists include Teresa Baker, 2017 Wynne Prize, Art Gallery of NSW finalist, Keith Stevens 2015 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards finalist, and Ginger Wikilyiri whose work has been featured in international and national galleries.
‘This is a very old idea, an idea that came to us through our Ancestors,’ said Pitjantjatjara artist, Keith Stevens.
All of the artworks have been acquired for the Artbank collection and will be available through Artbank’s leasing scheme once the exhibition has concluded. The leasing scheme allows individuals and organisations to lease the artwork to be displayed in their chosen space. All the leasing fees are used to support emerging Australian artists.
The exhibition is particularly important as it is during the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Some of the videos on display include the native language of the artists. There is supporting material available with translations and essays explaining the work.
The exhibition will be on display at Artbank’s Sydney and Melbourne galleries:
