Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services The Honourable Mark Ryan

Townsville is on track to receive a new Fire and Rescue Station, with Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan announcing Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) was looking for land to build the facility.

Minister Ryan said the Palaszczuk Government is committed to boosting resources where they are needed which is why QFES is now searching for a suitable site for a new South Townsville Fire and Rescue Station.

“It’s anticipated QFES will purchase land this year and start planning and construction the following year,” Minister Ryan said.

“The Fire and Rescue Service do an outstanding job keeping the community safe and enhancing capabilities in areas like Townsville will ensure they can continue this work into the future.”

Member for Townsville, Scott Stewart said he had advocated strongly for new Emergency Services facilities for Townsville.

“Townsville is growing strongly and it’s important we have the emergency services resources to match that growth,” Mr Stewart said.

“The Townsville community will benefit greatly from this new station, which will replace the existing South Townsville Fire and Rescue Station and provide updated facilities to ensure the community remains protected.”

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach who joined Minister Ryan in Townsville, acknowledged the importance of enhancing resources and infrastructure in parts of Queensland well versed in responding to natural disasters.

“Be it bushfire, flood or cyclone, North Queensland is no stranger to extreme weather conditions and the 2019 Townsville floods are a reminder of how exposed this region can be to severe weather,” Commissioner Leach said.

“Both QFES personnel and the community will benefit greatly from the new South Townsville Fire and Rescue Station.

“QFES is looking for the ideal location for the new South Townsville Fire and Rescue Station to enhance our operations in Townsville, with construction expected to commence in 2023.”

During the visit Minister Ryan also presented an upgraded appliance for Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers in the region.

“The upgraded Gudjuda Rural Fire Brigade appliance, proudly displays the Gudjuda Reference Group Aboriginal Corporation emblem,” Minister Ryan said.

“The brigade is one of the RFS First Nations brigades, which is a partnership that recognises the importance of Indigenous land and fire management practices.

“The Medium Attack appliance has been fitted with updated features including technology to enhance mobile and radio reception in remote areas, and electric hose reels.

“I know this truck will be of great benefit to the brigade and put to good use.”
