New Hotel On Yarra To Create More Than 500 Local Jobs

  • Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade

The Northern bank of the Yarra is set to become a hub of entertainment, hospitality and employment with a new hotel development to create more than 500 local jobs.

Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula today announced that major American hotel group SH Hotels & Resorts will operate the new 280 room hotel, to be built as part of the $450 million Seafarers’ development.

Project developers Riverlee will build the complex, designed by Fender Katsalidis, which will also feature apartments, a function centre, bars and restaurants.

Riverlee have signed an agreement with SH Hotels & Resorts to launch the first luxury 1 Hotel in Australia at the Seafarer’s development.

Other 1 Hotel locations include Brooklyn and Central Park in New York City, and South Beach in Miami, putting Melbourne’s waterfront in company with some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

The hotel will create 551 ongoing jobs, with 47 more set to staff the luxury function centre and retail outlets.

The development will also open up 3,500 square meters of riverside public park designed by Oculus.

Both Fender Katsalidis and Oculus are award-winning firms behind the striking architecture and landscape at Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art.

Construction on the Seafarers’ development is expected to begin in 2020 and completion is flagged for 2022.

As stated by Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula

“Riverlee’s investment is great news for Victorians – it will create more than 500 new local jobs and support both hospitality suppliers and retailers.”

“Securing one of the world’s top luxury hotel operators to build in Victoria is a clear sign of confidence in our visitor numbers, our economy, and our reputation as a city of great food and drink.”

As stated by Riverlee Development Director David Lee

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Australia’s first 1 Hotel to the iconic banks of the Yarra River and will work closely with SH Hotels & Resorts to create an outstanding precinct.”

“1 Hotel Melbourne will be designed by a Melbourne based firm and will use recycled materials, including the salvaged timber from the wharf restoration works, as well as native greenery and industrial steel.

As noted by SH Hotels & Resorts President Arash Azarbarzin

“We’re excited to bring 1 Hotels to Australia, working alongside a world-class organisation like Riverlee. We look forward to creating the finest luxury destination in the heart of Melbourne.”
