The Andrews Labor Government has announced the appointment of Lisa Nichols QC as Victoria’s newest Supreme Court judge.
Justice Nichols was admitted to practice in 1998, joined the Victorian Bar in 2007 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2017.
She has extensive senior legal experience in commercial law, regulatory matters including competition and consumer law, and professional liability.
Justice Nichols has run ground-breaking cases and conducted significant class actions in which foundational principles were developed while class-action jurisprudence was in its early stages in Australia.
She has extensive experience, appearing in many complex multi-party actions where she appeared for and advised individuals and class members, regulators, government and government agencies, listed companies, company directors and insurers.
Justice Nichols appeared as senior counsel for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission in the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry (2018), and as junior Counsel Assisting the Bushfires Royal Commission (2009-2010).
In March 2019, Justice Nichols was appointed Senior Counsel assisting the Victorian Mental Health Royal Commission.
Justice Nichols has a Bachelor of Laws with honours from Monash University.
She replaces the Honourable Justice Clyde Croft who retired in October, after also serving with extensive legal experience in commercial law.
