New judicial appointments to the Melbourne and Brisbane registries of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia

The Attorney-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Honourable Mark Dreyfus KC MP announced last Friday the appointment of Ms Simone Bingham and Ms Anna Bertone as Judges of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) (Division 2).

Judge Bingham has been appointed to the Melbourne registry of the Court, and Judge Bertone has been appointed to the Brisbane Registry. Both will commence on 3 June 2024.

The Chief Justice of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) and Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2), the Honourable William Alstergren AO, said that the appointments of Judges Bingham and Bertone are warmly welcomed.

“Judge Bingham comes to the Court with a wealth of experience and expertise in employment and other areas of civil law after almost 20 years at the Victorian Bar and a decade in practice before that, starting out in Queensland.

“Judge Bertone brings some 30 years of experience in family law, in which Her Honour has advocated for clients in both Queensland and Western Australia.

“On behalf of the Court, I am delighted to welcome Judges Bingham and Bertone to the Bench. Their Honours will play a critical part in the Court’s commitment to providing access to justice to the people of Australia, and importantly, to the communities living across Victoria and Queensland,” the Chief Justice said.

Biographical details:

Judge Simone Bingham

Ms Bingham graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology in 1994 and a Master of Labour Relations Law from the University of Melbourne in 2003. Ms Bingham was admitted to practice as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1994 and was called to the Bar in 2003.

Judge Anna Bertone

Ms Bertone graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia in 1993. Ms Bertone was admitted to practice as a Solicitor and Barrister to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1994. Ms Bertone was called to the Bar in 2014.
