New laboratory for local medical innovations

An investment from the Victorian Government has enabled the opening of a new facility that will the speed up the time it takes to develop and trial medical devices, allowing patients to benefit sooner.

Neo-Bionica is a joint venture between the Bionics Institute and the University of Melbourne that will fast-track new treatments for people with conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, hearing loss, stroke and diabetes.

Neo-Bionica will help address a nationwide shortage of suitable medical device development and manufacturing facilities, and will form an instrumental part of the government funded Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery.

Along with the latest cleanroom technology, the new facility will house cutting-edge engineering equipment with the Victorian Government contributing $4 million towards a laser welder, precision mill and medical packaging.
