Today we released the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan 2021-2031.

The plan’s target is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to represent 3.43% of the national health workforce by 2031. This matches the expected percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the working population.

Governments and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health sector co-designed the plan.

It includes a wide range of actions across the health system to attract, recruit and retain First Nations people over the next decade.

The plan supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to participate in the health workforce across all roles, levels and locations. This will:

  • expand access to culturally safe care
  • improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • provide well paid, secure employment for First Nations people.
