Townsville City Council will invest more than $1.5 million to install a new odour control unit at the Mather Street Pump Station.
The tender was awarded to RPC Technologies at the Full Council meeting last month.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Russ Cook said the project would support up to 30 jobs, including local electrical and civil contractors.
“This is a highly specialised project with no local suppliers available, so the evaluation considered not only the best value for money for the ratepayers, but also the engagement of local subcontractors where possible,” Cr Cook said.
“This project will provide RPC and their subcontractors substantial work over 8 months and will support up to 30 jobs.”
The odour control unit supresses any unpleasant smells coming from the pump station and is an essential component.
Cr Cook said RPC Technologies has a proven track-record delivering projects of a similar scale.
“Odour control is a significant component of managing our wastewater pump stations and is crucial to meeting our environmental regulations,” he said.
“The technology that RPC will be using is a bio-trickling filter to break down the odour causing pollutants and is an eco-friendly option.”
