Tasmanian students are being given an earlier opportunity to explore their strengths, interests and future career pathways through a new Year 8 pilot program being delivered in partnership with the Beacon Foundation.
Alongside the Year 8 pilot, $2.4 million has been committed to support the Beacon Foundation’s work-based learning services program in schools, ensuring more students can benefit from these valuable experiences.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said by investing in opportunities for our next generation, we’re building an even better Tasmania.
“This pilot is all about helping students better understand their strengths and the opportunities available to them beyond school,” Minister Palmer said.
“It gives our Year 8 students the chance to really stop and think about what direction they may want to head in once they’ve completed their schooling.
“They can identify their existing skills and interests, connect classroom learning with future opportunities, and hear firsthand from people working across a range of industries.”
The program commenced in Term 3 at Deloraine High School and Campania District High School, with Devonport High School and Kingston High School to join the pilot in Term 4.
“Our Year 8 pilot program works hand in hand with the Beacon Foundation’s ongoing work-based learning program,” Minister Palmer said.
“We know just how valuable it can be when young people are given the chance to participate in work-based learning or work experience, and we’re proud to continue to invest in this important initiative.
“Through our ongoing partnership with the Beacon Foundation, we’re supporting students to explore career options earlier and build confidence in their future, delivering on a key finding from the Independent Education Review.”
Beacon Foundation’s Chief Executive, Scott Harris, said year 8 is a pivotal time for young learners.
“Beacon is incredibly enthused by the State Government’s commitment to this work in ensuring our students are as prepared as they can be to maximise their education and ultimately take up the employment opportunities this state has on offer.”
