New prefabricated tiny homes to boost WA’s social housing stock

  • Innovative pilot project for Cook Government delivered by WA-owned Summit Homes
  • Modular homes are factory built, then transported to site
  • Building method means faster construction time, less time on site, waste reduction, design adaptability and a smaller on-site building footprint

Housing Minister John Carey has today unveiled the Cook Labor Government’s first four new tiny homes being delivered for social housing in Perth’s southern suburbs.

The $1.039 million pilot project will deliver four small, prefabricated homes built by Summit Projects. These four new tiny homes utilise a unique method for rapid construction and will boost seniors housing in the Perth metropolitan region.

The four one-bedroom, one-bathroom social homes in the Spearwood project utilise Weathertex boards made from waste timber sourced in Australia and long-lasting 100 per cent recyclable metal frames. Prefabrication is undertaken over approximately 12 weeks at the WA-owned and operated Summit Projects’ Canning Vale factory.

The design and construction method means faster construction time, less time on site, waste reduction, design adaptability and a small on-site building footprint that allows for more extensive landscaping.

This innovative approach to social housing offers the opportunity for an increased number of single bedroom dwellings, within a shorter timeframe.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“Our Government is utilising a number of alternative construction methods to deliver more social housing across the State, including our modular build program, timber frame, prefabrication and steel frame construction.

“These four new prefabricated tiny houses – delivered through our Government’s housing reforms – will provide new homes to vulnerable seniors in our community.

“We’re not stopping our ambitious program through our record $2.6 billion investment which includes delivery of around 4,000 social homes and maintenance and refurbishment to be undertaken to thousands of dwellings across the State.”
