The Albanese Government is cracking down on text-message scams with the SMS Sender ID Register now in place.
From today, if a sender ID is not registered, the text message will be labelled as ‘Unverified’ as a warning to people that it could be a scam.
The SMS Sender ID Register helps protect Australians from scam messages that impersonate organisations like Australia Post, the Australian Tax Office, banks and retailers.
Sender IDs are the names at the top of text messages that tell you who the message is from.
The Register will make it harder for criminals to impersonate trusted organisations and brands, and give people confidence that the messages they receive are from who they say they are.
The SMS Sender ID Register is overseen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
Businesses and organisations that have not yet registered their sender IDs should contact their SMS provider now to avoid any disruption to their communications.
