Excessive speeds are front of mind for Police ahead of this long weekend as a person will face the Court for their alleged role in putting the community at risk.
Northland Police have been out and about in our communities actively ensuring motorists are committed to following the road rules.
However, around 9.30pm on Monday evening, Police observed a vehicle travelling at excessive speed.
Northland District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Anne-Marie Fitchett, says the vehicle was alleged to be travelling more than double the posted speed-limit.
“Police units signalled for the vehicle to stop where the driver was spoken to.
“The 23-year-old male was arrested and has since been charged with exceeding the posted speed limit, as well as driving while disqualified.
“He is due to appear in the Whangārei District Court tomorrow, Wednesday 27 March.”
His vehicle has also been impounded.
Inspector Fitchett says Police are urging motorists to consider the safety of the community.
“Our Policing teams across the District are committed to ensuring our roads are safe for everyone, but we need you to do your part, too.
“We are actively patrolling areas where there is a higher risk to road users.
“Our intention is that our presence will deter drivers from dangerous driving behaviours to ensure everyone travelling on any road is safe.”
Police have no tolerance for speeding and are issuing tickets as required to those who are found to be travelling above the posted speed limit.
“We are also focussing on those driving without a seatbelt, or while impaired or distracted, which includes driving while fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and driving while using your mobile phone,” she says.
“Keep in mind the impact your actions on the road have on other people.
“We want everyone to be safe and feel safe on our roads, particularly ahead of this long weekend.”
