Non-stop flights between South Africa and WA recommence

  • South African Airways non-stop flights between Johannesburg and Perth to resume in April 2024
  • Service to operate three times per week, providing more than 39,000 inbound seats to Perth each year
  • Flights are now on sale
  • Connection will boost tourism to Western Australia, making it the 19th new or relaunched direct international flight post-pandemic

Non-stop flights between Johannesburg and Perth will return in April 2024, marking the 19th direct international flight secured or relaunched by the WA Government post-pandemic.

South African Airways, who operated daily flights between Perth and Johannesburg pre-pandemic, will run the resumed service three days per week on an Airbus A340-300, supported by the WA Government, in partnership with Perth Airport.

It is estimated the non-stop service will bring more than 39,000 additional inbound passengers from South Africa to Western Australia every year.

South Africa is one of WA’s most significant inbound markets for travellers whose main trip purpose is visiting their friends and relatives.

Western Australians born in South Africa make up the fourth largest group of migrants in WA, with 49,000 people coming under this category.

Pre-pandemic, Australia attracted 58,000 visitors from South Africa in 2019, 34 per cent of which visited Western Australia.

The latest 12-month figures show that South African visitors stay an average of 40 nights each in year ending September 2023, injecting an estimated $28 million into WA’s economy.

As stated by Acting Tourism Minister Reece Whitby:

“We know the huge benefits that direct international flights have for our State’s tourism industry, so we’re very excited about the resumption of this direct service from Johannesburg.

“We have a large and very proud South African community here in WA, and I have no doubt they will warmly welcome this announcement.

“I certainly encourage people with family and friends back in South Africa to share this great news and get them to start booking their tickets to Perth.”
