North Queensland communities to celebrate Australia Day 2020

This weekend, the Palaszczuk Government is partnering with Townsville City Council to deliver Great Australian Bites, a food and music program showcasing Queensland’s regional and remote communities.

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said that the event would be held at The Strand Park and Foreshore in Townsville from 12pm to 5pm on Australia Day, 26 January.

“Great Australian Bites is a wonderful chance for locals to get together and enjoy fresh regional produce, cooked by local chefs. It’s also an opportunity to listen to home grown entertainment, and soak up the summer atmosphere,” Mr Stewart said.

Minister for Communities and Minister for Disability Services and Seniors and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke encouraged all locals to join the celebrations.

“I encourage everyone to come down to The Strand and be a part of this fantastic event,” said Mrs O’Rourke.

Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said that Great Australian Bites would have something for everyone.

“This event gives locals the opportunity to come together and celebrate what it means to be Australian and to be part of helping to build a stronger and more cohesive community,” said Mr Harper.

Australia Day Awards ceremonies will also be held in Burdekin, Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook.

Australia Day Ambassadors, acclaimed Indigenous artist Miss Chern’ee Sutton (Burdekin), doctor, and STEM enthusiast and tropical disease researcher Professor Peter Leggatt AM, ADC (Charters Towers) will be among special guests at the Australia Day Awards ceremonies.

The Premier said they are among more than 40 high-profile Queenslanders, including Queensland Greats, television personalities, entrepreneurs and athletes, who are participating in more than 58 council-run events taking place across the State as part of the Australia Day Ambassador Program.

“Australia Day is an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate our vision of contemporary Australia and to acknowledge our history,” the Premier said.

“Communities large and small are the foundation on which Australia is built, and I encourage all Queenslanders, far and wide, to come together to celebrate on our national day.

“My Government is proud to continue its work on behalf of all Queenslanders promoting and protecting our State’s wonderful diversity.

“Australia Day is an opportunity for all of us to remember who we are and to consider how lucky we are to live in Queensland.”

The Australia Day Ambassador Program and Australia Day Program of events and activities in Queensland are proudly supported by the Queensland Government in partnership with the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
